Upon entering the Heavy Roc Music studio in Lower Manhattan, we find Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson, aka electronic music duo, The Knocks making, well, “Magic.” An old-school boombox (perfect fit for the shoulder of any thug) is propped against a wall of Polaroids. There are speakers, keyboards, soundboards, green skulls along the tagged up walls of the studio and a place the guys can call home.

Their (sometimes brutally) honest opinions about EDM and rap, as well as their varied live-apparatus approach to production gives them an edge in a MacBook-lovin, bedroom-producer world.

Watch as The Knocks share some advice for one, Lil’ Wayne and the methodology they maintain to always keep their sound “organic.”
