93 People Arrested at EDM Fest in Australia

93 People Arrested at EDM Fest in Australia

Charley Rogulewski Posted December 1, 2012

Ecstasy, amphetamines, cocaine, cannabis, GHB and MDMA were only some of the drugs picked off of some 100 revelers at the 2012 Stereosonic music festival in Melbourne, Australia. A whooping 93 people were arrested in a dog sniffing operation on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the festival grounds, reports Melbourne's The Age.

The electronic dance music festival kicks off summer Down Under. Stereosonic travels to Australia's five biggest cities -- Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane -- across two back-to-back weekends with the world's top DJs. This year the lineup included Tiësto, Avicii, Calvin Harris, Martin Solveig, Laidback Luke, Diplo, Bassnectar, Foreign Beggars, FeenixPawl, Zedd and many more. An estimated 60,000 people attended the Melbourne event.

80 of the 93 arrested festivalgoers were referred to the drug-diversion program and five were handed a cannabis caution, which does not go on one's permanent record in Australia. Seven were charged with actual drug possession and trafficking. One renegade was arrested for being drunk. Prior to the fest, South Australian police also intercepted 3000 pills, most of it ecstasy, en route to the Adelaide Stereosonic stop.

The arrest number jumps by four people from last year's Stereosonic event, held at the same venue. In 2011, police arrested 89 people for illicit drugs possession at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

If you're curious to see what goes down at one of these giant parties, YouTube and anti-Aids organization (RED) teamed with the Melbourne Stereosonic stopover for a live stream of the fest in honor of World AIDS Day. Watch it below. (Look at how happy everyone who wasn't arrested is!)
