Jamie Foxx Says He Spoke To Spike Lee About 'Django Unchained'

Jamie Foxx Says He Spoke To Spike Lee About 'Django Unchained'

VIBE Posted December 24, 2012

With Quentin Tarantino's latest cinematic creation "Django Unchained" hitting theatres tomorrow, much controversy has already surrounded the slavery love story.

In a recent interview with VIBETV, "Red Hook Summer" director Spike Lee revealed he wouldn't be catching the Tarantino flick. "I cant speak on it 'cause I'm not gonna see it," he says. "All I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors. That's just me...I'm not speaking on behalf of anybody else."

Lee then took to his Twitter to add, "American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves.Stolen From Africa.I Will Honor Them."

The film depicts Django (played by Jamie Foxx), a lovelorn slave who turns bounty hunter under the tutelage of Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) to find his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington). His biggest obstacle? The devious plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

The flick's leading man tells VIBE in the Dec. 2012/ Jan. 2013 issue that he had run into Lee during the summer. "I ran into Spike Lee at the BET Awards. You know Spike, he'll let you have it whether it's good, bad or ugly," Foxx recalls. "And he said, 'I'm not going to say anything bad about this film. It looks like y'all are getting it."

This wouldn't be the first time Lee has spewed harsh words against Quentin. Lee criticized the "Pulp Fiction" director for his liberal use of the n-word in his 1997 blaxploitation film "Jackie Brown" starring Samuel Jackson.

"I'm not against the word. And some people speak that way. But Quentin is infatuated with that word," Lee said in a Variety interview. "What does he want to be made, an honorary black man? I want Quentin to know that all African-Americans do not think that word is trendy or slick."

Lee is currently in the production phases of his upcoming studio film "Old Boy."
