Allen Hughes Talks 20-Year Anniversary of "Menace II Society"

Allen Hughes Talks 20-Year Anniversary of "Menace II Society"

Iyana Robertson Posted January 11, 2013

Believe it or not, the classic hood drama "Menace II Society" turns 20 years old this summer.

Directed by The Hughes Brothers, "Menace II Society" starred Larenz Tate, Jada Pinkett and Samuel L. Jackson. Allen Hughes, one half of the directorial duo, stopped by Sway in the Morning to discuss the film's anniversary. Hughes also described his first encounter with 2Pac, with whom he had a controversial relationship with thereafter.

Recounting his casting of Larenz Tate for the role of O-Dog, Hughes discussed his struggle to find the perfect actor, and how Tate's audition won him the part. He also described he and his brother's first reaction to one of Tate's most popular scenes in the film.

"We literally woke up out of our sleep because if the way it sounded. It was so real," he said.

Hughes also spoke about the day he first met Tupac Shakur, two days before shooting him in Digital Underground's "Raw Fusion" music video.

"There was this one guy that just stood out to me," he said of Shakur. "He was the funniest guy I ever met. He was snapping on everybody. I fell out my chair at one point like, 'I don't know who this dude is, but I like him!'"

Hughes went on to discuss with Sway how his relationship with 2Pac became sour back in 1994. Check out a clip from the interview here:
