Nas Talks About Why He Recorded the Grammy-Nominated "Daughters" and How He Ended Up Using Amy Winehouse's Vocals On "Cherry Wine" (Video)

VIBE Posted January 16, 2013

From what we've heard over the course of the last month or so, Nas doesn't really care about getting nominated for Grammy Awards. According to his official tour DJ Green Lantern, Nasty actually enjoys being the king of the underdogs and doesn't really care for all the props he receives from the mainstream. But, that doesn't take away from the fact that Nas was nominated for four Grammy Awards this year. Specifically, his 2012 album, Life Is Good, is up for the "Best Rap Album" award, while his single "Daughters" is up for the "Best Rap Performance" and "Best Rap Song" awards and his song "Cherry Wine," featuring Amy Winehouse, is up for "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" award.

So, recently, the AP sat down with Nas to talk about the two songs that earned him Grammy nods this year. And, he talked more about both of them. As you'll see in the video below, Nas started off by explaining how the concept for "Daughters" came about (any man with a teenage daughter will definitely understand!) before moving into an explanation about how and why he decided to use Winehouse's vocals on "Cherry Wine."

"She was working on a 'Me & Mr. Jones, Part 2,' but she wanted me to be on this one," he said. "What I was told from her team is that she wrote these lyrics about me…She was like an angel that left us too soon. But, she did leave some music for us to record…I'm very honored to have her on the record."
