The Rapper: 50 Cent
The Stunt: In September 2007, Fif threatened to retire if his new album, Curtis, was outsold by Kanye West's new album, Graduation. He played up his possible retirement in the weeks leading up to the Tuesday that both of their albums were released.
How Well Did It Work? As far as sales go, Kanye's album easily outsold 50's album. Graduation sold more than 957,000 copies, while Curtis sold just 691,000. But 50 didn't retire. Instead, he sat back and counted all the cash he made by selling almost 700,000 copies of his new album while acknowledging that the whole thing was a publicity stunt.
