#2 → TIMBALAND
Peak VIBE Era Run: 1997-2006
Certified Banger: Aaliyah-"Are You That Somebody?"
Power: Few producers can lay claim to single-handedly changing the direction of popular music on three separate occasions. But Timothy Mosley is not your ordinary superstar producer. When the Virginia native unleashed Missy
Elliot's 1997 debut single "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," the creeping futuristic bounce was promptly copied by a legion of acolytes. When Aaliyah's 1998 brilliantly weird, stutter-step of a masterpiece "Are You That Somebody" took flight, R&B once again did a 180 and followed the leader.
Tim then turned his sights on conquering the pop world, a feat he shockingly pulled off on Justin Timberlake's 2006 album FutureSex/LoveSounds. Regardless if we give Timmy the side eye for claiming a few years later that he was
washing his hands of hip-hop for more pop-friendly terrain, his legacy is set.
