10 Hunk-A-Mania Movie Roles Dwayne Johnson Should Play
Wrestler turned actor, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, was considered a novelty act when he first stepped onto the big screen in 2002's "The Scorpion King." But now, after appearing in over 20 major motion pictures, and making bank — The Rock is definitely a force to recognize in all of entertainment.
Earlier today, we reported about director David Yates' involvement in an yet-to-be titled "Tarzan" revamp. That got us thinking that the man formerly known as Rocky Maivia would make for a great lord of the jungle. With that in mind, we compiled these 10 "Hunk-a-Mania" Movie Roles that The Great One should play.
A Down-On-His Luck Professional Boxer —
It's hard for someone as charismatic as The Rock to appear less-than-mortal or weak. But that's what would make a movie starring him in that very role that much more exhilarating. Think Will Smith in "Pursuit of Happyness," but mixed with a more rugged element, as the former WWE Champion tries his hand at a more seriously themed project.
A Grizzled Firefighter Veteran —
Dwayne Johnson has had close calls with fire during his illustrious wrestling career. During the Attitude Era, The Rock was being talked about amongst WWE's creative staff to be the first to participate in a 'Burned Alive' match against Kane. Luckily for The Great One, the only heatwaves he had to experience was as big, tough guys in movies such as "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and "Fast Five." Johnson could bring his cavalier and gung-ho attitude into a picture that finds him fighting fires both on-and-off the job.
Black Tarzan —
Earlier today, we reported that David Yates (director, "Harry Potter") has signed on to bring Tarzan back to the big screen. While he's looking at some talented names (see: Henry Cavill, Charlie Hunnam) to play the King of the Jungle, let's be serious — women all-around the world would love to see The Rock in some loin cloth. If you don't believe us, just YouTube his "Saturday Night Live" appearance and listen to those natives squeal in delight. Hollywood, if you heard that, just think of it as box office booty.
Black James Bond —
Everyone is wondering when Idris Elba will get to drive that Aston Martin DB5, but what about The Rock?! The guy sure can fill a suit when he wants to, for one thing. Another is that the multiple WWE champion has a penchant for carrying a film, which is bound to become too heavy for Daniel Craig to hold eventually. Lastly, with the illustrious "tanning effect" in place, and sweeping all over Hollywood, who would you rather have leading your blackbuster franchise: a guy know for falling off "The Wire," or a man simply known as "The Great One"...? You be the judge.
A Powerful, Single Black Father —
Black Hollywood hasn't done a successful story about this trope since Will Smith's "Pursuit of Happyness." But with Malcolm Jamal-Warner picking up the slack on BET's "Reed Between the Lines," who says that a big screen production of the single Black father wouldn't work in today's Hollywood? The Rock, a single father in real life, could play the character with relative ease and a plume that could show just how much range the former WWE star really has.
Marvel's "Black Panther" —
We reported that Stan Lee has confirmed "The Black Panther" and its existence, so why not let the People's Champ play the People's King? As long as they stick to the comics, the man formerly known as Rocky Maivia cannot lose. He's played the tribal warrior before, but if anyone knows the stinginess that lies within the King of Wakanda's throne, it's The Rock, and he would make for a great addition to the growing Marvel acting-action stars roster.
A Legendary Black Cowboy —
Does anyone remember another Black cowboy movie after "Posse"...? Don't worry, we'll wait! Whether it be Bill Pickett or Cecil Johnson, Dwayne could be the first African-Samoan-American to bridge the gap between Hollywood and Black history. Plus, the guy is pretty nifty on an acoustic guitar, which is an essential for any lone range cowpoke.
A New Version Of "Blade" —
It doesn't matter if Wesley Snipes is still in the bing—vampires are still a hot commodity. Why can't Black Hollywood continue to tell supernatural stories for our audiences? As the tanning effect continues to influence the mainstream, a "True Blood"-esque revamp of the popular Marvel vampire hunter is definitely in order. Johnson, a man who has proven to be able to take a bump or two, would be the perfect choice to bring "Blade" back to the big screen for the 21st Century.
A 21st Century Version Of Shaka Zulu —
Henry Cele originally played Shaka in the 1986 television serial film, which focused on the king of the Zulu nation from 1816 to 1828, and the writings of the British traders who dealt with him. Much like Alex Haley's "Roots," there hasn't been another program that captivated the masses with such intrigue and interest. But revamping the role with the king of the Smackdown as its lead would make "Zulu" 2.0 "the most electrifying historical novel film of all time!"
A Black Detective —
Say what you want (in the comments section below) about "Alex Cross," as there are different strokes for different folks. One that many cinephiles would love to experience is the rise of a real Black detective. A Sherlock Homeboy of our era that can fight the crimes that plague our community without coming off as blaxploitation. With The Rock looking to add a few diverse credits to his IMDB (see: "Snitch" for example), he could showcase his acumen and athleticism in a way many are not accustomed to. Which would be great for The Great One!
