10 Music Festival Disasters

Bianca Mukhi Posted March 15, 2013
Yesterday (Thursday, March 15), a portion of a stage at Ultra Music Festival collapsed, leaving four injured just one day before the beginning of the festival's first weekend.

With our thoughts and prayers with the victims for a speedy recovery, the abide by the saying "the show must go on!"

Click through to find out which festivals in the past kept on truckin' post major disasters.
Pukkelpop 2011
The Belgian festival saw an unexpected and damaging storm in 2011, which blew tents, large screen displays and stages to the ground, causing cancellation of the entire festival. There were reportedly five deaths and over 70 injuries as a result of a stage collapse. The festival carries on and will always remember to tighten those rigs.
Altamont 1969
The Altamont Free Concert
It anticipated to be the Woodstock of the West, with a lineup boasting the Rolling Stones, Santana, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, but the latter did not play when The Hells Angels, as hired security, used force on the rowdier group members and incited a chaotic frenzy. One person was stabbed to death by an Angel, two were killed in a hit-and-run incident, and one drowned in a nearby excavation pit. On the other hand, four births were also reported. Fate.
Love Parade 2010
In 2010, the world’s enormous electro festival,Love Parade, had gotten so large that Germany’s largest city refused to host it. As a result, it was moved to a nearby city, but a tragedy occurred in a small tunnel that served as the only entrance to the festival grounds. So many people had packed into the space that when a few started to panic, so did the rest. A stampede ensued and 21 were trampled to death.
Glastonbury 2010
The collapse of over 600 tents sparked mass confusion and chaos when people under all sorts of influences found themselves covered in the thin fabric of their deflated tents, with no way out. It has since been realized that the problem was low-budget tents that were distributed at the site.
Roskilde 2010
While Pearl Jam buttered up the Danish crowd, fans bum-rushed the stage, trampling nine people to death in the process. It is said that there are lyrics inspired by the tragedy in their song, “Love Boat Captain”, in which they sing, “Lost nine friends we’ll never know… two years ago today.”
EDC Las Vegas 2012
The second night of EDC Las Vegas 2012, a windstorm blew through the Valley, causing the festival to be shut down for a night as attendee safety was thought to be at risk. Since partygoers were unable to leave at once, smaller stages stayed live to keep morale up. The festival proceeded as scheduled on the last day, and finished without a hitch.
Woodstock '99
A Woodstock commemoration festival was held and featured the likes of Korn, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine and other angst-ridden groups. The wild energy in the festival led to violent mosh pits and vandalism. Eventually the 250,000-strong crowd set fire to the stage.
Glastonbury 2005
Years before the tent fiasco, Glastonbury went through a sopping overturn when storms and flash floods put much of the festival grounds under four feet of water water. Several stages were struck by lightning, but there were no reported casualties. A flood from some years before had led to the development of the drainage system that allowed the flooding to dissipate in just a few hours.
Bloc Festival 2012
A ship had been sent from Germany as the venue for the festival’s main stage, but overcrowding kept most from getting in at all. After bars had run out of beer by 10:30pm on the first night, the sound quality had proven sub par. People, tired from milling around for hours, decided that the event would be cancelled for the safety of the audience. Snoop Dogg was to headline that night, but nobody got a chance to cruise with the big dawg.
