10 Must-See Hip-Hop Acts at SXSW 2013

10 Must-See Hip-Hop Acts at SXSW 2013

by Sowmya Krishnamurthy Posted March 14, 2013
SXSW has officially kicked off. With hundreds of official and unofficial concerts, showcases and secret events, the annual music festival can be overwhelming. VIBE has you covered with the 10 hip-hop artists you gotta see before you leave Austin.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
The Seattle rapper and producer duo are killing it right now with their #1 hit “Thrift Shop” and high-profile performances everywhere from Saturday Night Live to Ellen. The two are literally the Kings of SXSW this year. WIth several shows and appearances scheduled throughout the week, don’t be surprised if you run into them more than once.
Earl Sweatshirt
Earl Sweatshirt has made a name for himself as part of Odd Future as well as a solo act. Earl will be performing to promote his upcoming album Doris. If Odd Future’s past SXSW performances are any indication, expect plenty of post-pubescent craziness.
Action Bronson
The hilarious gourmand (who sounds an awful lot like Ghostface Killah). Action Bronson has been heralded as one of the voices of new New York rap. Aside from being able to rap his ass off, Bam Bam is known for connecting with his live audiences. Who knows, maybe he’ll pass out some Peter Luger steaks onstage again.
Baauer
Meet the guy who made “Harlem Shake” a national craze. Baauer spins hip-hop, pop and trap beats and turns any show into a dance party. How many times will he spin “Harlem Shake” in one night?
Eddie B and Harry Fraud
The rapper and producer team up for their upcoming Horsepower EP expected to drop during SXSW. Kick back and get on that mellow wave. Eddie is also prepping his upcoming solo album Paper Piff & Polo.
Rockie Fresh
One of the latest signees to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group roster, Chicago’s Rockie Fresh is more skinny jeans and ambient sounds than luxury cars and strippers. Take a trip down Electric Highway and peep one of the year’s buzziest newcomers.
Hit-Boy
From producing some of the biggest hip-hop songs of late (The Throne’s “In Paris,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Backseat Freestyle”) to returning to his rapper roots, Hit-Boy does it all. Catch the multi-talented youngster as he previews cuts from his new album All I Ever Dreamed Of.
Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar is still flying high off his breakthrough album good kid, m.A.A.d city. See K Dot and all of his TDE crew (ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul) bring the West Coast love to Texas.
A$AP Ferg
After A$AP Rocky, Ferg is next in line from the Mob. Watch the New York rapper spit his street banger “Work” and other tracks at Viceland on Friday.
Angel Haze
Angel Haze may be brand new but she’s not afraid of controversy. From her rhymes to her Tweets (See her beef with Azealia Banks), the Detroit native is quickly making a name for herself.
