Anytime you decide to make a religious film you run the risk of angering a whole lot of people (which may or may not be a good financial decision), and we really don’t know what to make of Noah. Okay, it’s got an excellent cast with Russell Crowe in the eponymous title role and Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, and Sir Anthony Hopkins filling out the meatiest roles. It also has the benefit of being directed by Darren Aronofsky, a critical darling for years and most recently due to the excellent psychological thriller Black Swan.
But what exactly is going to happen in this film? Is it going to be a traditional look at a Biblical story a la the Ten Commandments or is it going to be something much weirder since it is coming from a director who has been making odd films his entire career? The trailer includes battle scenes and Russell Crowe looking very epic, so is this going to be something similar to Gladiator?
The huge budget (likely well over $125 million) and the controversy surrounding it make it an incredibly risky venture. There are a lot of questions now, but we’ll find out soon about the film because it debuts March 28.
