If you are feeling confused as to why this list contains so many sci-fi flicks, don’t worry, you’re not going crazy. Sci-fi movies are notorious for attracting huge swaths of cash in the hopes of stumbling upon the next Matrix or Avatar. Unfortunately, not everyone can be a winner, and a shaky film such as Transcendence looks like an early contender for the dubious “Flop of the Year” award.
The trailer starts out promising enough as Johnny Depp says a bunch of techno mumbo jumbo and an ominous score begins to play, but we quickly are launched into something that smells like a bad murder mystery. Depp gets shot and his mind is transferred to a computer, but is it actually him? Or is it just the computer imitating Depp? Oh no! There’s a big dilemma on what to do now that Depp/Cyber Depp starts killing people! Oh no!
Another risky sign is first-time director Wally Pfister. Pfister has plenty of experience as a cinematographer on Christopher Nolan films such as Inception and the Batman movies, but Transcendence will be his first directorial effort. Giving a first-time director a big budget? Oh, that has never been a problem before!
