The Wachowskis are responsible for one of the most innovative films of the past 15 years (and Keanu Reeves’ last hit) with The Matrix. That being said, their last two directorial efforts, Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas, have been huge bombs, and early signs for Jupiter Ascending have not been promising.
We have Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis running around the galaxy against a backdrop of brilliant lights and CGI that wouldn’t look out of place in a Pink Floyd planetarium laser light show circa 1975. These kinds of films are huge risks as they combine enormous budgets ($200 million) with directors who have really only had one hit. That’s a dangerous combination, so you have to hope the Wachowskis have something up their sleeves that will keep this film from becoming 2014’s John Carter.
