Edge of Tomorrow
There was a time when a Tom Cruise headlined movie was just about a guaranteed hit. Those days ended sometime around the last Clinton administration, and yet Mr. Cruise is back again with another big budget sci-fi actioner. This time he plays a soldier who fights his enemy, dies, then comes back again because he fell into some sort of time loop. Is this an Alien-Groundhog Day hybrid? Do we really want to see Cruise fighting the same fight over and over again?
The trailer doesn’t show us anything particularly new, but it does bring to mind underperformers such as After Earth and Cruise’s own Oblivion, and those are not connections you want your potential audience to make. Cruise’s latest Mission Impossible flick was a global success, so his star hasn’t faded to the point of no return, but he was surrounded by an ensemble cast. Edge of Tomorrow seems to exist because someone wants to prove Tom Cruise will still be able to carry a film. Will it work? Find out on June 6.
