Kanye West – "Guilt Trip"
The ascending rainbow of buzzes in the first 17 seconds of this brain-shattering beat is something else. Splintering, twitching drums aside, the flourishing sound effects at the beginning sound like Mario just gained an extra life, though old heads might also draw similarity to the noise that the original 1983 arcade version made when Mario
would knock off one of those pesky turtles. I’m probably (surely) reading too deep into it, but perhaps the paradoxical life/death signifier of the sound is Kanye’s expression of his own conflict: Yeezus is industrial, dare I say soulless music that simultaneously invigorates and re-humanizes him. Or maybe I should just put this hydro down.
