Mix the baritone gravity of E-40 and the poetic prowess of Kendrick Lamar, and you can begin to understand what Jonwayne sounds like. He’s unlike any other West Coast rapper I’ve heard, self-deprecating and abstract, ultimately demanding multiple rewinds just to catch what he’s saying. One line will be confusingly oblique, and the next will be profoundly resonant. It’s only right that indie heavyweight label Stones Throw picked up the MC and released a dope cassette (yes, a cassette) that features some of his spacey production as well. Catch him in NYC alongside Toro Y Moi and Shlohmo on July 11.
