9. “Blurred Lines” broke records and became the biggest hit of 2013.
It’s hard to think of an international smash hit that was bigger than Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” in recent years. It was the first of Pharrell’s one-two punch that landed with Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” yet it eclipsed every song released this year to become the best-selling song of 2013. The steamy uncensored video initially caused a ruckus, but the song itself became so ubiquitous that people actually started hating it.
Lawsuits ensued between Marvin Gaye’s Estate and Robin Thicke’s people, as the former claimed that the song lifted a loose interpolation of Marvin’s “Got To Give It Up.” Meanwhile, the song soared like a phoenix, breaking radio records and Billboard records simultaneously as the #1 single on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts for 12 straight weeks.
