6. Kendrick’s “Control” verse stopped the world.
You’ve heard it, and if you haven’t, you’ve heard about it. The verse heard ‘round the world. The one that surely left every rapper and their crew of yes-men with jaws dropped as they avoided each other’s eyes in the studio and suddenly realized that their day of reckoning had come. Kendrick Lamar’s guest feature on Big Sean’s “Control” shook up the game like a cheap bag of weed, spitting in the faces of colleagues while aspiring to join the ranks of the greats. He even made us forget the elusive illusion that is Jay Electronica rapping after him.
Some say it wasn’t even a diss. Others say it had been done before by Kurupt on “Calling Out Names.” But everyone agreed that it was a necessary strike against the wackness that passes for hotness in today’s rap world. Months later, people were still talking about a guest verse on a song that didn’t even make Big Sean’s album. That’s called making an impact.
