7. Miley Cyrus found hip-hop.
Most people would say this is one of the worst musical moments – Miley Cyrus twerking upon the apathetic Robin Thicke while she does questionable things to a foam finger. Fair enough. But people kept on hating Miley for the image she projected while ignoring the fact that she can actually sing. Four years ago, she claimed to have “never heard a Jay-Z song” in her life (hard to believe), but now she’s recording with Mike WiLL, Wiz Khalifa and Future.
Some are calling her out for appropriation of black culture, and they’re not totally wrong. But good music is undeniable, and when Miley and Future joined forces for the Atlanta astronaut’s new single, “Real and True,” it made everyone forget their preconceptions about Miley. She sings her heart out alongside Mr. Hudson, and the single represents not only her triumph as a recording artist, but hip-hop’s ability to transform and still retain its earnest charm.
