Election 2012: Which Celebs Should Advocate Gay Marriage?

Michael Arceneaux Posted May 11, 2012
When Michelle Obama two-stepped with Beyoncé last year for her “Move Your Body” campaign, the First Lady was able to pimp B’s star status to spread her fitness crusade. VIBE explores which artists can bring attention to this presidential season’s hot-button issues
The Issue: Legalizing Gay Marriage
The 411: As several states debate whether to let same sexes put a ring on it, “homosexual conduct” is still prohibited in others like Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma.
Celebrity Advocate: Lil B
Song Slogans: “Pretty Boy,” “Gon’ Be Okay,” “Neva Switch”
The Issue: Universal Healthcare Reform
The 411: For Americans without medical coverage, a simple nosebleed can spur a spaz out. President Obama may have passed huge healthcare reform, but Republicans want to snatch it back next year—if the Supreme Court doesn’t first by June.
Celebrity Advocate: Mariah Carey
Song Slogans: “Don’t Forget About Us,” “My Saving Grace,” “Breakdown”
The Issue: The Stop Online Piracy Act
The 411: The RIAA and its movie counterpart, the MPAA, are seeking to cock-block overseas sites that traffic in pirated material. Despite being pulled after public outcry, the bill’s still got legs and could put Facebook, Wikipedia and blogs in legal limbo.
Celebrity Advocate: Fabolous
Song Slogans: “Click & Spark,” “If They Want It,” “Why Wouldn’t I”
The Issue: Increased Taxes on the Wealthy
The 411: While many working class citizens are still pledging Broke Fi Broke, there’s growing resentment and protests (see: Occupy Wall Street) over billionaires like Donald Trump coughing up fewer taxes. Raising the rate on the 1% could help shrink federal debt.
Celebrity Advocate: J. Cole
Song Slogans: “Dollar and a Dream,” “Cost Me A Lot,” “Can I Live”
The Issue: Education Reform
The 411: Besides calling for states to up the legal high school dropout age to 18, President Obama is also pushing to make college tuition less costly and expand federal loans so more students can stack degrees to keep warm.
Celebrity Advocate: Asher Roth
Song Slogans: “I Love College,” “Common Knowledge,” “Get By”
