5 Rappers Who Should Have Won "Best New Artist" At The Grammy Awards But Didn't

VIBE Posted January 23, 2013
This year, a rapper will not win the "Best New Artist" trophy at the 2013 Grammy Awards. We know this because no rappers were actually nominated for the category. But, does it really matter? Last year we thought for sure that Nicki Minaj was going to win the award, but she ended up getting beat out by Bon Iver, who seemed more surprised than anyone else when his name was called. And, once again, a rapper got snubbed by the Grammy voters.

We don't know exactly why. But, over time, there have been a number of rappers who have been nominated for the "Best New Artist" category and walked away empty-handed on Grammy night. It puzzles us. So, we decided to put together a list of 5 Rappers Who Should Have Won "Best New Artist" At The Grammy Awards But Didn't. Can anyone help explain why these rappers got the cold shoulder at the Grammy Awards?
The Rapper: Drake

Nominated For "Best New Artist" At: The 2011 Grammy Awards

Beat Out By: Esperanza Spalding

Why He Should Have Won: Spalding's victory on Grammy night was huge for the jazz community. But, let's be honest: If you look back at the year leading up to the 2011 Grammys, no rappers, rookie or veteran, had an impact like the one that Drake had. So, it's a crime that he didn't get rewarded for it.
The Rapper: Kanye West

Nominated For "Best New Artist" At: The 2005 Grammy Awards

Beat Out By: Maroon 5

Why He Should Have Won: To shut him up! Kanye deserved the award that night…and he hasn't let us forget about it. He's still talking about not winning this award. So, the Grammy organizers should have given it to him, if for no other reason than to shut up the future version of himself.
The Rapper: 50 Cent

Nominated For "Best New Artist" At: The 2004 Grammy Awards

Beat Out By: Evanescence

Why He Should Have Won: A lot of rappers say they want to change the rap game. 50 actually did it. From his approach to rapping (beef with everybody!) to his approach to releasing free music through mixtapes, 50 had a huge impact on the way we listen to and enjoy music.
The Rapper: Puff Daddy

Nominated For "Best New Artist" At: The 1998 Grammy Awards

Beat Out By: Paula Cole

Why He Should Have Won: Although he's not the best rapper we've ever heard, Puff started to make his mark as a solo artist in '98 and built an empire. Cole had a couple of nice songs. But, Puff was putting together something much, much bigger. Grammy voters should have recognized that.
The Rapper: Tone Loc

Nominated For "Best New Artist" At: The 1990 Grammy Awards

Beat Out By: Milli Vanilli

Why He Should Have Won: We're not going to sit here and stan for Tone Loc. But, c'mon: He lost to a couple of guys who didn't even perform their own music! Really, Grammy voters?!
