The Business of Solange Knowles

Rachel Francois and Niki... Posted October 20, 2012
Just as the Olsen twins Mary Kate and Ashley made it clear they want to be recognized as distinctive individuals, Solange Knowles dares you to keep her in her older’s sister shadow.

As the fashion’s world budding muse, the youngest Knowles boldly stands out on her own. She embodies a cool eccentricity that is visually punctuated by her natural mane (whether out in an explosive ‘fro or coiled in trailing tresses) and her sartorial panache for mixing designer prints as well as music records begs you to watch and listen.

Once a backup dancer for her sister’s (that would be superstar Beyoncé) R&B/Pop group Destiny’s Child, the Sol-Angel has notable notches in her belt that’s worth running down. Although, she waves off the responsibility of “role model,” she sure makes business moves worth looking up to.
Solange released her debut solo album aptly titled Solo Star in 2003 at the tender age of 14. Several years later, after a stint away from the limelight and with a much more mature sound, Bey’s little sis released her sophomore LP Sol-Angel and the Hadley St.Dreams in 2008. Holding on to the Motown aesthetic, the album offers soulful coming-of-age tales of a young woman/lover in a retro vibe. Aside from her own songs, she been a songwriter for sassy hits like Beyoncé’s “Upgrade U,” “Get Me Bodied” and “Why Don’t You Love.”

Nowadays, she’s recording her forthcoming studio album, which includes recently released track “Losing You,” while frequently manning the 1′s and 2′s for some of the hottest parties all over the world.
Somewhat of a triple threat, Solange has made her rounds on the acting lot and starred in "Johnson Family Vacation" and "Bring It On: All or Nothing."
Solange snagged a major beauty deal with cosmetic giant Rimmel London in Fall 2011.
Serving as the resident-model for Madewell’s Fall 2012 campaign ”Mix well. Madewell,” Knowles struts in pairing combinations of bright colors polka-dotted and striped patterns to let you know it’s so cool to be remix fashion rules.
Along with Cassie and Selita Banks, Solange held it down for the natural sistahs as one of the faces for Carol’s Daughter hair products. She no longer serves as brand ambassador for the brand, telling Luvre Magazine that she was “constantly fighting for the right message to be heard.”

“The way we wear our hair is a personal choice, there’s no right or wrong way; one way doesn’t make us more intelligent, or more superficial, and every one makes that choice for very different reasons,” she told the publication.
Now that she’s successfully solidified herself as a fashion It Girl by gracing several mag covers and walking a few runways, Solange is full-fledged money-making brand. However, our Hadley St. hopes of experiencing Solange, the fashion designer, are a dud.

“Honestly, I would never do anything like that—there’s so many talented designers that have such a massive skill and have been working on it for so long,” Solange told The Cut.

Although we won’t be checking out Solange-designed collections, the 26-year-old has an awesomely bright future in music, beauty and fashion.
