Is it possible for a landmark album to be underrated? In the case of OutKast’s game-changing debut, the answer is an emphatic hell yeah! Looking back, the two scrappy, unpolished rhyme neophytes from Georgia came off just like any other Starter cap wearing, weed burning kids trying to figure it out. But the fans turned on by the Curtis Mayfield-inspired single “Players Ball” had no idea what was headed their way.
Listeners didn’t know that Andre and Big Boi would lead the charge for a new exciting rap collective—the Dungeon Family. That the diverse clique’s production crew—Organized Noize—would go on to achieve their own much deserved super producer acclaim and that the Goodie Mob would become established pioneers of the Dirty South. Or that OutKast, in a few short years, would become the most important hip-hop duo of the decade.
