For DJs By DJs: Six Nu Disco Artists You Need To Know

VIBE Posted January 26, 2013
"Not yet the Biggest but certainly the soon to be Baddest 'Nu Disco talents on the planet!"

Compiled by Steven Lee, better known by his DJ alias Lee Cabrera, has been rocking turntables way before half of today's mainstream dance artists were even born.

Back when Limelight ruled the nightlife, Lee witnessed the rise and fall of hundreds of EDM acts before the term "EDM" existed. A World Music Award nomination, as well as regular appearances at the hottest clubs - including Space in Ibiza, Pacha in Buenos Aires, and Womb in Tokyo - shows he knows a thing or two about what it takes to stay in this industry. Check out his picks for the DJs putting the "new" in nu-disco. -->
Thee Cool Cats (MEXICO)
Hailing from Mexicali, producers Gerry G & Tony E (Thee Cool Cats) hooked up in the studio after seeing an explosion of a new music genre that reminded them of the '90s hip-hop. Their first single "Hands on the Pump" caught the eye of Nu Disco great Amine Edge.

Their latest single "Miss My Love" is on constant LOOP here in my studio and is now signed with NYC label great, Nervous Records. These new "Cats" although veterans are about to see some new, well-deserved love from Nu Disco's finest labels.

HNQO (BRAZIL)
When I first heard about HNQO he was a young Brazilian about to sign his first record "Point of View" a peak-hour main room monster to our Wasted Youth label for FREE. As all eager youngsters are, their money interests are the least of their concerns, and just getting someone to hear his music was the #1 priority. That was 6 months ago and NOW this Curitiba Brazilian is signing every record he makes to Nu Disco's creator & DON, Jamie Jones and his "Hot Creations" & "Hot Waves" labels and has secured himself a residency DJ spot at D'Edge, Sao Paulo's best underground venue. Shame on me as "Point of View" on Hot Creations went on to be a Top 3 record on Beatport and was played & charted by every top Nu Disco DJ in the world.

HNQO or Henrique which he's known as by his mates continues to keep the gas ON with following up "Point of View" with Pain 'N Love" & "City Lights" also on Hot Creations and "As I See" on OFF Recordings.

Now being seen on official BPM & WMC Hot Creations events it's only a matter of time until this kid evolves into the next BIG TALENT in the Nu Disco genre!

Newbie Nerdz (ITALY)
I found this next duo from Naples, Italy while I was scouring the Deep House-Nu Disco sections of Soundcloud before they even released any records. With musical textures that reminded me of a Maceo Plex and as crisp and dirty as Art Department, I was hooked.

My favorite so far is their super fun and boppin' remix of Caspar "Melt Away" on NEIM records. "Slow & Steady always wins the Race" is what house great Danny Tenaglia used to say to me, and I think these kids are a perfect blend of it all!

Climbers (MEXICO)
Jay Blackk & Kiko Deal are the Mexican powerhouse that I first heard about almost a year ago after they sent me their The Jet's "Crush On You" remix. Their "Law of Attraction" EP was recently picked up by Culprit LA. "The Price of Power" is probably their best work and will most likely pop in the UK first but it's "Criminal Love" that is being positioned as the breakout tune for the Climbers.

Cassette Club (UK)
London based Ben Macklin & Tom Hammond, aka Cassette Club, could be the next Phoenix, Grum or Passion Pit, but with all that toughness of Hot Natured or Art Department. My personal favorite is "Flash" & "Living in a Video" and it's here where Cassette Club comes full circle with perfect vocals, skilled production with its big synth melodic lines and their signature gritty bass. After a minor hiatus, I hope this is where we see some amazing stuff in 2013 from these guys.

Moonwalk (ITALY)
Moonwalk pride themselves on being more than just another Nu Disco duo with a Deep Sound but describe their sound as more, "Cosmic Vintage". I debuted these guys on my Bangkok Radio show with their redo of the classic Groove Theory, "Tell Me" remix and the phones lit up. "In their Defected Records release "Maya" they give us a touch of soul and sensuality, then bring things back up with some classic disco on "Free From Your Love". Other collaborations include their alias Fractales with the Newbie Nerdz for their "Hysteria" single on Louder Music.
