Electronic Oscars: 10 Film Genres That Need A DJs' Spin

Electronic Oscars: 10 Film Genres That Need A DJs' Spin

Gabrielle Pharms Posted February 21, 2013
With the 2013 Academy Awards going down this weekend, our beat-filled brains started revving up to 130 BPMs. Skrillex has contributed some of his signature dubstep tunes to the Spring Breakers soundtrack that is slated to drop later this spring. The soundtrack for the action packed thriller, Hanna (released in 2011), was produced by the legendary big beat duo, The Chemical Brothers. Daft Punk came stepped out to release their score for Tron: Legacy in 2010, Paul Oakenfold laid the tracks for 2001’s Swordfish and so forth and so on.

How would a trapstep soundtrack enhance Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln? What if trance DJ/producer Ferry Corsten produced the score for The Notebook? We decided to put together a top ten wish list of the DJs that should land a gig in producing a movie soundtrack. Lights, camera, untz untz, untz…
Thriller-Action
Russian techno producer, Proxy, creates dramatic and boisterous tracks fit for action scenes. 'The Music from the Eastblock Jungles' series sounds like a continuous action movie filmed in Europe.
Western
DC and Hooks of Zeds Dead could concoct the perfect progressive electronic compilation that would suit a gun match or a love scene.
Sci-Fi
The “Reasons” remix produced by 12th Planet featuring Doctor P and Juakali screams “ALIEN!” The array of EPs that 12th Planet has produced consists of a mix of dubstep and otherworldly synthy effects.
Comedy
A comedic plot calls for an understated, yet playful score. That’s why French EDM artist, Mr Oizo, is the man for the job. For example, “Flat Beat” has the unique quirks and catchy tempo to heighten a comedy’s funny factor.
Romantic Comedy
A rom-com is the figurative sweet and sour genre of the movie world. Hence, it would only make sense to host a soundtrack that includes a sound that is overall sexy and mellow. Justin Martin’s house tracks, preferably from Ghettos & Gardens, would be quite the staple for the next rom-com.
Historical Drama
Dutch trio, Noisia, recently produced the soundtrack for the action video game, “DmC Devil May Cry.” The DnB/electronica/dubstep blend on the “DmC” soundtrack holds the same intensity that would resonate clearly through a film.
Musical
Can you imagine an actual musical with singing and dance music? No, we’re not talking about a Chris Brown and Afrojack mash-up (detestable) – but an actual EDM remix of a classic musical. Rock of Ages meets Bassnectar? Yes, please.
Fantasy
Tech trance’s distorted hi-hats, hard synths, and dreamy melodies can capture the two main components of the next fantasy flick – action and Armin van Buuren.
Romance
Zedd’s Clarity album incorporates love ridden lyrics and soft melodic tracks on an electro house platter. He’s a pianist that possesses EDM production skills that cover a wide ‘spectrum’ of prerequisites for a mesmerizing love story.
Horror
Only Knife Party could use their music to keep us on the edge of our seat as much as a scene from a psychological thriller. Although we dance and happily jump to their dubstep/electro house tracks; these same songs easily could be used as the soundtrack of a murder scene from a movie. Yowza.
