Golden Touch: 10 Ways to Impress the Oscars

Golden Touch: 10 Ways to Impress the Oscars

K. Clark Posted February 24, 2013
Tinsel Town's biggest night jumps off for the 85th time from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. In preparation for tonight's festivities, VIBE commends all the nominees for contributing great pieces of art with something truly being made for everyone. The individual performances from veterans (Denzel Washington) and newcomers (Quvenzhane Wallis) have actually been one of the best in recent memory.

Which brings us to you, struggling thespian.

If you're currently at home, gearing up your Oscars party with $5 foot-longs and chips, this list was put together with you in mind. For those who aren't trying to spend 2013 at the back of the bus, we present 10 Ways to Impress the Oscars in hopes that your name will be called to walk upon that stage in the future.

Play A Heinous Villain —

If you're one with your inner dark side then playing a baddie could result in you catching the Academy's attention. Be prepared for cinephiles to call your evil doers character until you find someone even badder to play!

Sing A Moving Song —

Les Miz's own Anne Hathaway wowed the audience and the Academy alike with her impressive performance in the movie musical. If you're looking to make yourself visible to the Academy, you better brush up on your Gershwin!

Overcome An Obstacle —

The Academy, much like in life, enjoys rooting for the underdog. Films like Flight and Ray took the most humane challenges, ramped them up for emotional value, and heard their names called at the Oscars. Get into a picture with some true struggle and your name can be called too.

Create Controversy —

Whoever said that bad press is still good press must've known something that the Academy knows. Hollywood enjoys a bit of controversy, and for an aspiring screenwriter or director, courting it can result in your name alongside Quentin Tarantino and Stanley Kubrick.

Be a Bonafide Star —

In the case of this year's Oscars ceremony, Quvenzhane Wallis is that star. As the youngest to be nominated for Best Actress, the pint size powerhouse is a perfect example of the magnetism the Academy is impressed by.

Work With Steven Spielberg —

Blessed with a Midas touch, fortunate actors are elated to be able to be in a Steven Spielberg picture. If you're afforded the opportunity to cast yourself in his next project, just know that the Academy will be scrutinizing your every take.

Give A Weird Oscars Speech —

Don't let your pre-Oscars speech be raw enough to get the FCC involved. But if you're able to capture the Academys attention with your winning enunciation and flair, you may be remembered come voting time.

Capture A Moment In Time —

Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty were voted upon their historical impact upon theater-goers. To those screenwriters thumbing through the funny pages, it may be time for you to turn it to The History Channel if you want to bring home a golden statue.

Be Named Christophe Waltz (...or Denzel Washington) —

Being considered for an award may seem like an unattainable feat for most actors, but if you just so happen to have undeniable skills then you will be an annual attraction at the festivities.
