Guest Editor Bill Bellamy Gives His Year-In-Review

Stacy-Ann Ellis Posted December 18, 2012
2012 was a wild ride. It has seen some of the most viral trends as well as monumental moments of triumph and tragedy. Guest editor Bill Bellamy weighs in on the year’s most standout phenomenon.
President Obama’s Re-election:

“It was insane to watch and to feel it. It felt like for a minute he was behind in August and then he started gaining points. Then all of a sudden he just took off. I said hallelujah! It’s a part of our history. We are living it. I went to the inauguration. I was out there campaigning and pushing the vote with the youth, so I feel like I was a part of this movement. I was excited.”
Uppercut Bus Driver:

“You know what, you gotta leave them people alone man. Stop messing with these bus drivers! Leave these people alone, let them do the driving. Stop pushing them in the head. I thought it was probably the most comical uppercut in the history of busdrivership. I’ve never seen anyone get lifted up in the air like that. That was insane. And remember back in the day, we used to always mess with the bus driver. We ain’t know he was real! Bet you we know now. Leave that man alone. Let that man push the button for you to get off.”
Kanye and His Kilts:

“I’ll let Kanye live with that. I’m not going to do it. He can wear the kilt; he felt Irish. I can’t do it. You can’t go from How to be a Player to kilts. You can’t.”
Gangnam Style:

“I’m telling you right now, if I see anybody from the hood doing that Gangnam style dance, you’re going to get smacked right upside the head. That’s supposed to be for fun white parties. White people get a couple of drinks and have some fun, they can go Gangnam style. No brother is supposed to. You stop! As soon as you see them say, “Come on let’s do it,” you go in the bathroom until they get over with it. Don’t you do that. Don’t let ‘em suck you in.”
Hurricane Sandy:

“I’m a Jersey guy. Hurricane Sandy is the craziest thing we’ve ever seen. In my lifetime, I never thought the water would ever come that far in and do damage. We’ve never seen that before. That’s like something from a movie. But it happened. Certain family members are out of power forever. Some people are just getting back on their feet, believe it or not. And some people are not back on their feet. It’s not in the news, but cats got mopped up over there. Anything that people can do to help, donate. Because they’re always going to go on to the next story, but that was crazy for us and New Yorkers. Anyone that lives by the water knows its devastation.”
The Elmo Situation:

“Aww man, I never saw it coming with Elmo. Elmo didn’t do it, his daddy did it. We still love Elmo, but his daddy’s freaky. What was he doing? Elmo’s big. I remember when cats were paying $100-200 for Elmo. I remember people fighting over Elmo one Christmas. Do you remember when Elmo blew up? Elmo was the hottest thing to have, period. Elmo’s daddy just went left, so we’re just going to pray for him.”
Love & Hip Hop Atlanta:

“I only watch that show for Stevie J just so he can make that face, like something stinks real bad. I don’t know what Stevie J is putting in these girls’ drinks, but he sure had them shot out. He’s got two of his chicks going to therapy with him. Do you know what kind of power that is that you can do that? You get a chick to go to therapy with you and your side chick? Wow. He broke the mold with that.”
Katt Williams’ Meltdown:

“Katt Williams is a good buddy of mine. I think that he just needs some real friends around him right now, people that really are going to protect him and look out for him. You know, we’re laughing and stuff but the things that are going on are not funny. He could hurt somebody or hurt himself. The fans are not happy, so he needs real family and real friends that are not about the money; just somebody to look out for him and make sure he’s okay. Something is going on in there and I don’t want anything to happen to him. He’s so talented and he’s such a good guy. I just don’t see why all these things are happening right now. Like, come on man. But everybody has a cousin like that. It’s not like it’s a shock. Everyone has a cousin that’s wild, so we’ll see.”
The Sandy Hook Shooting:

“I was watching it on the news like what the fuck is going on? We’ve got to do something with the gun laws. They’re too lax and they’re not consistent across the country. They’ve got to suck it up and get it right because we’re losing too many people. These guns are getting in the wrong hands. What’s next? People shouldn’t be getting shot at school. There’s nothing about a gun in school that makes any sense. At all. These little innocent kids going to school and getting an education, that’s not right! We’ve got to address the gun law issue. We can’t keep running from it. Somebody’s got to man up. Obama’s got to man up or whoever at the NRA. People aren’t shooting deer and other things, they’re shooting people. It’s not cool.”
