Dwight Howard caught a lot of flack for being too goofy and always smiling while in LA, but you seem to have fun. Why do you think you’ve been able to avoid that stigma (especially with number 24 on the team)?
(Slight laugh) I mean, I just know what Kobe stands for and what he represents. He takes game prep and the game so serious, so he holds his teammates to the same standard. Dwight is more go with the flow. Kobe preps for every ordeal during practice, when he’s watching film. Dwight wasn’t into it like it that and Kobe thought, especially with him being a superstar, that Dwight was. But when he noticed that he wasn't, they clashed.
I mean, Shaq had fun though.
Yeah, Shaq had that goofy quality about him but was all about business when he stepped on the floor. He even says it about Dwight, that’s why they clash too. You’re a dominant big man, you’ve got to be a killer. You can control the court and do what it do, but Shaq was different. But the situation with Dwight here was bad, man.
Speaking of Kobe, we know it’s going to take time for him to look like the Mamba we recognize but you’ve been in the gym with him. Before he got hurt again, what move, and give us names too, did he pull off in practice that made you feel like, ‘oh yeah, he’s back?’
It was probably the second day of his return to practice. Xavier Henry and Nick Young took times guarding him, but couldn’t stop him. He was hitting them with jabs, fadeaways and it was all cash. It was the SECOND day of practice after he officially came back from the achilles injury. I was just like ‘damn, I see why he’s the Bean. I see why he’s Kobe.’
