VIBE: The brand has really stayed true to what made it pop in the first place but has done new pieces, most notably the Super Bowl jackets. What’s been the inspiration behind them?
Carl Banks: Every season, we try to do a great quality piece. I’ll sit with my head designer, Danny Martinez and we go over concepts. We ask ourselves what will make the jacket special but also true to the tradition of the Super Bowl and the league?
We knew the league wouldn’t put out a silver jacket inspired by the Lombardi Trophy, so we did it. Then we think about the little details: the lining, the roman numerals, the emblem placement. That’s all apart of the process. We did an exclusive silver jacket for footlocker and two other versions for retail. We wanted to make sure that the heritage of the brand is something that will be kept going. Kids today are buying vintage, so we want to make something that kids years from now will check for.
There’s also Starter BLACK LABEL which is slightly more streetwear. What new pieces can we look forward to from that end of the brand?
We’re always been approached by other, really cool brands because we make an iconic satin jacket. We have to stay true to who we are, so we only collaborate with brands that it makes sense to work with. We’ve worked with Grizzly on snapbacks, Dee and Ricky, and there might be something with Johnny Cupcakes in the works.
