Was “Two Week Notice” inspired by a moment in your life?
This is some Flint shit—I worked at Big John Steak and Onion. I remember drawing the logo of my company on the back of receipts and shit; my boss would be like, when I’m not focused on serving food, I’m bringing down the morale of everybody else. I’m like, Bitch please. Another place I worked [was] at a plant called Adelphi; I hated that shit. Needless to say, through a plethora of dickhead employers I had a lot of motivation and inspiration to write “Two Weeks Notice.”
Did you ever spazz out at any of those jobs?
Me and my brother K. Wills would find new ways to quit jobs. We used to say we going to the bathroom and never come back. We’d find so much pleasure in that. Like, Damn, they probably panicking right now. [Laughs] Be nicer to your employees is the lesson.
You said that you listen to Seal and Cyndi Lauper. What is your favorite Cyndi Lauper song?
It’s a tie. It’s crazy, I sampled both of these songs: “True Colors” [and] “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” It might look crazy that that’s one of Jon Connors favorite songs; I don’t know when it got misconstrued. Listen to the words of the song: “I come home in the morning like my father says when you gonna live your life right, Dad you still number one but girls just wanna have fun.” I just want to live my life. You can feel that. What young person can’t relate [to] parents not understanding what you want to do?
And the last part: “Some guys take a beautiful girl/and hide them away from away the rest of the world/I want to be the one dancing in the sun/Girls just wanna have fun.” Break those lyrics down; when women have a controlling boyfriend or if you were attracted to this girl because of her vibrant personality, how you going to get with her and try to suppress that? Let her be what she was when you met her. Every verse in that song on some level, I can relate to. Cyndi Lauper is one of my favorite artists.
I can recite Seal from beginning to end. Seal is just amazing, probably one of my favorite artists of all time. I’ll sing “Kiss from A Rose” right here.
