What Kendrick Lamar Did: Called himself the "King of New York" on Big Sean's "Control"
When He Did It: August 2013
Why It Was So Controversial: Fun fact: Kendrick is from California, not New York. Surprise. So naturally, quite a few NYC-based rappers were up in arms about what Kendrick said on "Control." Everyone from Joell Ortiz to Papoose issued a response. And those who were called out on the song—J. Cole, Drake, Pusha T, etc—also had mixed emotions about being name-dropped by Kendrick. For a week straight, this was the only song that anyone in the rap community cared about.
