Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug and as The Necromancer —
Any #Section80s baby worth their weight in swank can recall that old Jules Bass, Arthur Rankin musical-cartoon. It was probably all of our first encounter, if you were a four year old. Outside of outright reading the novel, Orson Bean, John Huston (Angelica's father) and Glenn Yarbrough are as close to Elijah Wood, Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis in certain circles.
Smaug, one of the last remaining dragons in Middle-earth, is the main baddie in Peter Jackson's adaptation. Benedict Cumberbatch ("Star Trek Into Darkness") will portray Smaug through motion capture. Cumberbatch will also play the mysterious magical force known as The Necromancer. Will he have enough skill to be on par with Andy Serkis and his performance of Gollum?
The ruler of the stronghold of Dol Guldur is sensed by Radagast the Brown in southern Mirkwood, and plays an important part in developing the tone for the next cinematic chapter. Benedict Cumberbatch's performance has been hailed by Sir Ian McKellen as "electrifying, vocally and facially". Pretty nice compliment coming from Charles Xavier's arch-nemesis, no?!
