The Social Movement: Arab Spring movement
What It Was All About: Unhappy with the leadership in countries like Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, Arab rebels took to demonstrating against the regimes in power in late 2010 and held strikes and marches in different places to show their disdain. Many of these protests continue today in countries like Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan with residents of those countries looking to overthrow their current governments in favor of new ones.
How Social Media Helped: Twitter and Facebook have been a big help to the Arab Spring movement. Although many of the countries listed here have (or had) some form of Internet censorship in place, social media helped protestors organize, kept them in constant contact and, probably most importantly, got the word out about the protests to other parts of the world so that people could follow the movement and stay tuned into it. That alone forced many powerful men to resign and helped eliminate some of the governments that people were protesting against.
