The Social Movement: The Spanish 15M Indignants movement
What It Was All About: Before Occupy Wall Street, there was this. And this was a giant protest by many middle class people in Spain against the country's high unemployment rates, welfare cuts, banks, and current political system. The Indignants want radical changes made to the country's infrastructure and have continued to protest ever since May 2011 with somewhere in the range of eight million people taking place in the demonstrations involved with the Indignants movement.
How Social Media Helped: Many people point to social networks as the origin of the Spanish Indignants movement. What started off as some griping online eventually grew into a huge protest that has spread to different parts of Spain and inspired other movements like Occupy Wall Street.
