The Social Movement: The Direct Democracy Now! movement
What It Was All About: Saddled with an economy that's been one of the worst in the world over the course of the last few years, a large group of Greeks began demonstrating in different cities throughout Greece in May 2011 to protest a plan that called for higher taxes and less government spending.
How Social Media Helped: The movements in Greece earned the nickname "May of Facebook" because pretty much all of the demonstrations involved with it were organized by using Facebook. The protests in Greece are still going on today and Facebook and other forms of social media continue to be key for spreading the word about the movement.
