The Social Movement: 15 October 2011 global protests
What It Was All About: As you probably can tell by now, there have been a lot of different movements that were started over the course of the last year or two in different parts of the world. So on October 15, 2011, all of these movements decided to protest together in 950 cities from 82 different countries. The protests were meant to call attention to all of the individual protests that were going on at the same time.
How Social Media Helped: To organize the global protest, social networks like Facebook and n-1 as well as email chains were vital. It just went to show that if you're going to start a movement in the year 2011 (or now, in the year 2012), you need to know how to manipulate social media properly. Otherwise, you're unlikely to get your movement off the ground. That's what we've learned from Kony 2011—and from all five of the movements listed here.
So, what movement is coming next? We're not sure. But if there's one thing we've learned, it's that as long as social media exists, so will large movements. Stay tuned.
