The Moment: In mid-November, Mac Miller sold almost 145,000 copies of his debut album, Blue Slide Park, and topped the Billboard charts—making him the first artist in 16 years to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts without having a major label behind him. Miller remains one of the rap game's most coveted free agents.
Our Reaction: Independent DIY artists reign supreme! That's exactly what we thought when we heard what Mac had done. That kid deserves a lot of credit for proving that hip-hop artists don't need "the machine" to be successful anymore. All they need is a lot of drive, a lot of determination, a lot of Twitter followers, and a little luck and they, too, can make it to the top of the charts.
