Hip-hop maven Nicki Minaj never stops turning heads. The Young Money artist caught up with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts alongside singer Ricky Martin to talk about their teamwork with MAC Viva Glam Cosmetics to raise HIV/AIDS awareness around the globe. Minaj and Martin’s campaign with Viva Glam gives 100 percent of all the proceeds to fight the devastating disease that has taken millions of lives. The Viva Glam campaign has raised over 236 million dollars that has gone towards research and awareness.
Roberts quickly turned the interview over to Minaj to talk about her interesting and in some eyes controversial Grammy performance. The rapper spoke about her charcters “Roman” and “Martha” that she created two years ago.
“I never had the format to put them in front of the world,” Minaj said. “Roman is a character whose been ridiculed, he’s been torn apart and pulled down. I wrote the song and I envisioned it being in a monastery because Roman gets shipped away to a monastery by his mother who thinks something is wrong with him.”
Maybe Minaj’s explanation on where her idea came from will lead to some of the ridicule lightening up. Nicki Minaj’s second album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is slated for release later this year. She can also be seen on the cover of VIBE’s February/March issue. --Johnathan Cruse
