"Let's Go Crazy"
Prince already came up with the musical structure for "Let's Go Crazy." It was just a matter of us learning the song. But you know the long version you hear at the beginning of Purple Rain? That was recorded live with the entire band at the St. Louis Park Warehouse. You have that scene in the movie where the piano solo happens and Prince is banging on the keys with his foot. It sounds really dissonant and weird. That was my idea [laughs]. Prince said, "I want you to do a piano solo." At first I tried to do something melodic, but because the song was called "Let's Go Crazy," I thought I should do something that was out there.
I just started randomly smacking the piano not really intending to play anything. And Prince loved it. I wish that the long version could have been on the actual Purple Rain album. But Prince pretty much put that entire arrangement together. I don't think we contributed that much to "Let's Go Crazy" beyond my piano solo. It was all mostly Prince's vision. He's the one that came up with that big "Dearly Beloved" preacher's opening. That still gets people going.
