R & Beef: 5 Other Memorable Singer Fights

R & Beef: 5 Other Memorable Singer Fights

VIBE Pop Culture Posted January 28, 2013
Last night's brawl-for-it-all between Chris Brown and Frank Ocean set the Internet ablaze. But was it that serious? The two R&B crooners have had their fair share of arguments in the past -- there are retweets to prove it. But in 2011, a cease-fire was called signifying a truce between the duo.

All those walls came tumbling down when both men and numerous randoms reportedly got into a brouhaha at Westlake Studios on Sunday evening. With TMZ already in the mix, no arrests or charges made and a brief recap straight from Frank Ocean's Twitter mouth, 2013's already looking ratchet.

There's nothing cornier than "beef," but R&Beef holds a special wack distinction. Singing subliminal barbs to other singers over things like who can hit the higher falsetto or who stole whose hairstyle is trivial. But with this latest infraction on everyone's minds, we take a look back at 5 Other Memorable R&B Fights.

Enjoy the #struggle songs at your own risk.

R. Kelly vs. Trey Songz

A simple case of the young lion trying to dethrone the old one. Trey Songz, riding high off his string of stellar chart-topping hit albums, was feeling himself. On the other side, R. Kelly wasn't as hot sonically, as his "Trapped in the Closet" series was panned universally. Trigga pulled the trigger on a track called "Death of Kellz" and attempted to lop the head off of the Pied Piper of R&B.

Music fans were into the drama of it all, but the Chicago crooner didn't bite. Going for the elder statesman/Jay-Z route, Kelly took the higher ground. As music and gossip sites ran with the Trey Songz song, the behind-the-scenes movements involving Trey and Robert never went prime-time.

Shortly after, the love lothario (Trey) set the record straight by expressing his love for R. Kelly... but we know The R's got that rebuttal somewhere locked away in his vault somewhere.

Brian McKnight vs. Chris Brown

For the record: Brian McKnight's "P***y Works" song is absolute trash. Straight, pure basura. The song was so bad no one had anything positive to say to the "One Last Cry" singer-songwriter. To fight against the backlash, McKnight took to Twitter to reply to the "haters," saying: "Since everyone is so opinionated I'm taking suggestions on what I should do next I'm thinking rent a Lambo and beat the s**t outta my girl... That's acceptable these days."

While Chris Brown's horrible actions upon Rihanna do indeed show how a puchacha works, in this case, he didn't deserve the dig. Before you could say, "Yoooo!" Breezy slammed the Grammy award winning artist, calling him "old" and "irrelevant" and then offered to help McKnight's career from stalling—all he had to do was just ask. Many said the V.A. native won that "beef" and thank God because we would've died if Brian came out with a diss track.

Lloyd vs. Miguel

In 2011, when Kaleidoscope was but an image in his mind, Miguel was a newcomer looking to make a splash. At the same time, Lloyd, looking to reinvent himself, made an appearance on BET's 106 & Park to promote his new album. When the newcomer saw the established act rocking a similar 'do on the boob tube, Miguel took to Twitter to slang some verbal darts.

"Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Shout to Lloyd," wrote the upcoming performer. When Lloyd was pressed for a response by radio jock Devi Dev, the former Murder Inc. singer said, "Did you see me respond? That's peanuts to an elephant. I am not the one for a lot of talking so I will see him when I see him." Fast forward to 2013, and no one has really seen Lloyd anywhere, giving the Grammy nominated Miguel the win for Best Hair.

Keri Hilson vs. Beyonce

It's really no secret that the ATL songwriter has a bad taste in her mouth for the Queen. Way back in 2008, Miss Keri Baby dropped the remix to her song, "Turnin' Me On," which had a peculiar barb thrown at a certain Roc Nation artist. "She can sing, but need to move it 'to the left' / She need to go have some babies / She needs to sit down, she fadin'... / Go 'head and tell them folks how long I been writing your songs / I been puttin' you on, just check the credits."

King Bey never responded and the gossip blog commenters would rip the beautiful songstress to shreds for ever trying to shade Destiny's Child. In the end, the hype behind the beef simmered down when Keri Hilson addressed the issues in an interview with Hip Hollywood. Let's hope this is a good thing and the charismatic crooner can come out with more hot tracks.

Lyfe Jennings vs. Raheem DaVaughn

These two crooners from the gritty side of the (music) tracks never had a real reason to beef. A while back, Lyfe was told in an interview that the DMV singer-songwriter had issued a R&B "challenge" to him. The Apollo Amateur Hour winner accepted and said that he would "remix one of Raheem's albums" and prove he was the better artist.

Funny enough, Raheem was in town that day and added his two cents, saying, "I'll talk to that black man face-to-face to get it squared away." While these two may have come from rough environments, the beef was getting hyped up on R&B blogs and gossip sites. Thankfully for all those on the streets, it never went far, as the Ohio native (Lyfe) went to prison in fall 2010.
