Recap: Shocking Grammy Moments From Past Years

Recap: Shocking Grammy Moments From Past Years

Sowmya Krishnamurthy Posted February 12, 2013
The 54th annual Grammy Awards this past Sunday in Los Angeles was definitely one for the books. From Breezy's slight Frank Ocean shade to JT's eagerly anticipated comeback performance, we couldn't wait to see what was going down next. Of course, past years have proven that expecting the unexpected is the best formula. Recap some of the most shocking Grammy moments from past years.

Milli Vanilli

In the late 80s, boy group Milli Vanilli won over hearts with their catchy pop songs like “Blame It on the Rain” and “Girl You Know It’s True.” The duo even won a Best New Artist Grammy in 1990 Out of nowhere, it was revealed that Milli Vanilli was a total fraud and members Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus were lip-syncing the whole time. The two had to return their Grammy; the first time it’s ever happened. "We wanted to give the Grammy back. We felt in our hearts that it would be a good gesture to do that. But they made it look as though [the Academy] wanted it back,” said Morvan years later.

J. Lo’s Green Versace Dress

Real women have curves. Jennifer Lopez rewrote the award show dress code (and Hollywood beauty standards) with her eye-popping green Versace gown in 2000. Not even her date at the time, Diddy, could outshine the number. Since this dress, every singer has tried to up the nudity ante by wearing less and less. Nothing is topping the nude Versace—not even that hot black slit dress she rocked this year.

Eminem and Elton John Kiss and Make Up

Eminem came under major fire for homophobic lyrics on his The Marshall Mathers LP, so when he performed onstage with openly gay singer Elton John in 2001, fans were shocked. Elton, decked out in pink polka dots, even hugged Em at the end of “Stan.”

Bob Dylan Gets Soy Bombed

Before Lil Mama invited herself to Jay-Z’s performance, legendary rocker Bob Dylan faced an uninvited guest during his 1998 Grammy show. A random shirtless fool with “Soy Bomb” written on his torso decided to “stagebomb” the set until he was physically whisked away.

Mommy Swagga

Only M.I.A. and her little bump in the oven could upstage Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T.I. during their 2009 “Swagga Like Us.” A very pregnant M.I.A. performed alongside the Rap Pack, in a see-thru dress at that. Fans at home cringed, hoping that little M.I.A. Jr. would not make his stage debut during the song.

Cry Me A River

When Justin Timberlake accepted his 2004 Grammy for “Cry Me a River,” JT used the moment as a soapbox for an awkward and half-assed apology for his involvement in Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl nip slip. “Listen, I know it’s been a rough week on everybody,” he said, holding back laughs. “What occurred was unintentional, completely regrettable and I apologize if you guys were offended.”
