Ten years have passed since we lost an R&B icon who was just getting settled into her throne before she was taken away from us: Aaliyah Dana Haughton. At the time of her death, Aaliyah was making major moves. On the music side, she was promoting her newly released self-titled CD Aaliyah, which Rolling Stone referred to as a “near-flawless declaration of strength and independence.” In Hollywood, she had plans to film two sequels to The Matrix (Reloaded & Revolutions, respectively), a remake of Sparkle, a Fox Searchlight film called Some Kind Of Blue (where she would star in an interracial love story set in 1950s America), and was first choice as the lead in Honey (later given to Jessica Alba).
Listening to the radio, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard a song that makes you say “Damn, Aaliyah would’ve been HOT on that!” Here at VIBE, we've been noticing these for the past 10 years. It wasn't an easy task to narrow down, but check out our list of 10 songs made after the fateful day in 2001 that Aaliyah would’ve shined on had her career gotten the chance to skyrocket like we knew it would. Here’s to you, Baby Girl…R.I.P.—Keenan Higgins
