10. “Badge and Gun”
“Hand me down my golden hat/And grab the winter one at that/You never know how long I'll be away”
“Badge and Gun” could open the album; not only is the track a perfect telling of the emotions driving Mayer today, but it also shows the direction that he took after 2011: Southwest. Clearly rooting himself in old country and blues, “Badge and Gun” is a traditional “leaving and not coming back” love lament, putting Mayer in the shoes of an old west man waiting only for the next call of the trail. The time away, from spring to winter, leads to the “ghost town” Mayer finds in “I Will Be Found (Lost at Sea).” Sometimes we all walk the same path.
