#semester10: Scratch DJ Academy ft. A-Trak, DJ Kool Herc, DJ QBert
The origins of hip-hop and its long standing legacy were commemorated Wednesday night, Jan 18th as the Scratch DJ Academy celebrated ten years of teaching students the art of DJing.
Three kings of the turntables -DJ Kool Herc, DJ QBert, and one of its original instructors A-Trak, were awarded. Co-Founder, Rob Principe shared the vision behind establishing the company ten years ago, in front of a standing room only crowd at the Canal Room in Lower Manhattan. Scratch’s other co-founder, the slain Jam Master Jay was represented by his sons, TJ (DJ Dasmatic), Jason (DJ Jam Master J’son) and wife, Terri Mizell. TJ, performed alongside Jay’s band mate DMC, while J’son was given a thirty minute set on the night. The Grandwizzard Theodore, DJ Revolution, Mr Choc and a fray of graduated DJs were on hand for the scratching session as well.

DJ QBert
The filipino-Ame rican DJ was honored as the world' s best DJ back in 2010. He was also a member of the Rock Steady DJs.
"It’s [DJing] just like a musical instrument," QBert told VIBE. It’s just going to keep branching out to all kind of music, all kind of different ways, especially with Scratch."

DJ Kool Herc
Credited as the father of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc had a vital role in the birth of the culture.
"It was nice to be called out by people who pick up the mental rhythm like Jam Master Jay, Hoppa," Herc, told VIBE of his award. "Now turntables are selling more than guitars. I’m glad to see the generation still continuing the art form..." Then boasting: "Like America loves apple pie, we’re going to be here. Like my man KRS-One said ‘we’re going to be here forever.’ As long as there is Christmas, there’s going to be hip-hop.

TJ Mizell is following in the footsteps of his father and has recently crossed genres from hip-hop to EDM.
The youngblood jockey told VIBE: "Ten years ago was my first time stepping into the Scratch Academy. I got to be with legends that are here now, like Grand Wizard Theodre, A-Trak... Scratch is mad deep right now and it’s awesome to see all the people here!"
