The Artist: Rick Ross
The Exhaustion: Coincidentally, Rihanna isn't the only artist who has suffered from extreme exhaustion recently. Ross—who suffered not one, but two seizures while flying a few weeks ago—has also reportedly been suffering from a serious lack of sleep.
The Result: Ross just made his return to the scene to help Wale promote his new project, Ambition. But for the last few weeks, he's been off the grid and, presumably, taking it easy. That's a good thing considering Ross has spent the last two or three years dropping freestyles, mixtapes, and albums at a feverish pace.
The Artist: Tone Loc
The Exhaustion: While performing at a show in Atlanta in last month, Loc collapsed on stage and had to be rushed to the hospital. He was diagnosed with exhaustion—he had reportedly performed at 12 shows in the last two months—and needed to be given an IV to recover.
The Result: He doesn't perform as often as most rappers out there, but Loc's also a lot older than a lot of them, too. So he's needed to take it easy and cool out with all the gigs. Unfortunately, it seems he's prone to exhaustion. Just two years ago, he suffered through a similar illness and actually had a seizure on stage.
The Artist: Susan Boyle
The Exhaustion: Remember her? She was the Britain's Got Talent contestant who wowed the world with her ability to hit high notes. She also succumbed to a bout of exhaustion shortly after coming in second place on the show.
The Result: Boyle was drained both physically and mentally after appearing on BGT. As a result, she checked into a psychiatric clinic in London and had herself checked out. She got the rest she needed and checked out five days later to hit the road again.
The Artist: Wyclef Jean
The Exhaustion: While trying to get voted President of Haiti back in September 2010, 'Clef buckled under the pressure and checked himself into a New Jersey hospital, citing major stress and fatigue as his main reasons.
The Result: Although he spent just two days in the hospital, the former Fugees singer/rapper didn't go back to work for nearly a week after being released. Instead, he hung out at home and worked on getting his physical and mental health back in check.
The Artist: Lady Gaga
The Exhaustion: Just moments before she was scheduled to take the stage at a show in Indiana in January, Gaga started suffering breathing problems. Doctors later told her that exhaustion and dehydration were the causes of the problems.
The Result: Gaga cancelled a handful of shows in January. However, we're afraid she didn't take enough time off because she also nearly collapsed at a show in New Zealand in March. She cited jet lag, but she also admitted that she continues to struggle with exhaustion because of all the traveling that she does.
The Artist: Eminem
The Exhaustion: In 2005, Slim Shady cancelled an entire European tour because he was suffering from exhaustion. He had just finished a 23-date U.S. tour.
The Result: Of course, we now know that Em was suffering through a lot of issues at that time stemming from drug use and addition. He eventually got the help he needed, though, and got back on his feet.
The Artist: Selena Gomez
The Exhaustion: Adults aren't the only people who can get exhausted. When you work as hard as a teenager like Gomez does, exhaustion can also become an issue. And it did for her back in June when she had to be hospitalized for a combination of food poisoning and exhaustion.
The Result: After getting a couple days of rest, Justin Bieber's boo was back to her old self and back on stage for a performance in Los Angeles.
The Artist: Ruben Studdard
The Exhaustion: Everything was moving very quickly for the American Idol winner at the beginning of his career. So after the release of his second album, I Need an Angel, in November 2004, he checked himself into an Alabama hospital to be treated for exhaustion.
The Result: After being treated, Studdard was released and returned to his career.
The Artist: Whitney Houston
The Exhaustion: Did Whitney use exhaustion as a cop-out? Eh, hard to tell. But after getting into a small scuffle with a Delta Airlines attendant recently, she claimed that exhaustion, not drug or alcohol abuse, was to blame.
The Result: Fortunately, Whitney didn't get kicked off the flight. We hope she got some treatment for her exhaustion when she landed, though. She's been very hard at work on a remake of the movie, Sparkle, that's apparently been zapping her of a lot of energy.
The Artist: Dave Chappelle
The Exhaustion: Singers and rappers aren't the only artists who suffer from exhaustion. Comedians do, too. In July 2007, the creator of Chappelle's Show had to be hospitalized in Los Angeles because he was extremely run down. He was treated for exhaustion.
The Result: Chappelle only needed a few hours in the hospital to catch his breath. His publicist reported that he'd been traveling a lot at that time and that that had caused his exhaustion. Like all the artists mentioned here, he just needed to sit down and take a break from work for awhile. It really does do a body good.
