Lupe Fiasco vs Atlantic Records
Lupe Fiasco is still signed to Atlantic, but his relationship with the label has been nothing short of dramatic. The problem started when Atlantic refused to release Lazers, as they feared the album didn’t have enough hit records. Lupe claimed the label was reluctant to push his records after he refused to sign a 360 deal, where the label would get a large percentage of tours, endorsements, and other endeavors outside of the studio. He also said Atlantic didn’t understand his style on the album when he first presented it, encouraging him not to “rap too deep.” After a petition from Lupe’s fans, the album was finally released to commercial success, as well as critique for its more mainstream sound. Lupe went on to found independent label 1st & 15th, but his albums are still released under Atlantic.
