By 6:30pm, the Freedom Party DJs Herbert Holler, Marc Smooth, and Cosi—were musical Pied Pipers as the huge influx of music lovers began. Together these men are the founders of the Freedom Party, the longest-running Friday night dance event in New York City. Stone Jackson, paymaster for the Freedom Party, explained that it began at the Lower Eastside’s Star Food, which could hold about 110 people, ten years ago.
Stone elaborated, stating that this 10th anniversary in Central Park served as the most important event for the Freedom Party due to audience population. DJ Herbert Holler added that his dreams for the weekly gathering have come true, saying, “My vision is pretty much what it's come to be today: A party where music is first, highest on the pecking scale, and there's no attitude or dooshbag door guys or people sitting on couches trying to be cool.”
