The Best & Worst Of Reality Stars Turned Singers

The Best & Worst Of Reality Stars Turned Singers

Sharifa Daniels Posted February 7, 2013
If American Idol has taught us anything, it's that everyone -- seriously, everyone -- thinks they can carry a tune. Reality stars take TV fame to a whole new level when they mistake their 15 minutes for talent, using the spotlight to venture into music. Which would be great if they all had skills on the mic. Sadly, that's not often the case. Take a look back reality stars whose music careers either sank or swam (mostly sank).

Kim Kardashian

You have to applaud the future Mrs. West for sustaining celebrity status sans a primary talent (at least according to skeptics). While her sex-tape and Kardashian spin-offs may have been financially fruitful, Kim fell short when it came to music, despite having hitmaker The-Dream behind her single, "Jam (Turn It Up)."

Mama Jones

Airing out family business on a reality show wasn't enough to satisfy rapper Jim Jones' mom dukes -- she had to record her own track. During the first season of Love and Hip Hop, Nancy Jones a.k.a. Momma Jones dropped "Psychotic Bitch," an alleged sideways diss track about Jim Jones' then girlfriend Chrissy. While entertaining, the song lacked a few small components: good bars, flow, skill, timing...

Kevin Federline

Despite being a back-up dancer and reality star, having a music career was what K-Fed really wanted. Too bad it was something we never wanted to hear. Fed had two singles (including "Po Po Zow") before coming out with Playing With Fire in 2006. Not one hit, but he managed to get an F from Entertainment Weekly for his attempt at rapping.

Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton has tried everything to prove what happens when you have too much money. The Hilton heiress started her own label with the most fitting name, Heiress Records, and released Stars are Blind but in her case, it was more like, Stars Are Tone-Deaf.

Tahiry Jose

Tahiry’s debut single “Devil” caused the Love and Hip-Hop newcomer to get Donkey of the Day honors from Charlemagne Tha God on Power 105's The Breakfast Club. Despite her strange relationship with ex Joe Budden, Tahiry could have used his friendship as advice. He might've spared her some embarrassment.

Sheree Whitfield

Who’s gon' check her? That's the burning question Sheree was dying to know when she released this record, a play off of her Internet-famous Real Housewives of Atlanta catchphrase. The saying may have been catchy, but dedicating almost four minutes to it wasn't.

Mike The Situation

The Situation may be a Jersey Shore juice head, but he’s surely not a music head. The MTV star learned the hard way that his best asset is his Gym, Tan, and Laundry work ethic.

Erica Mena

Unfortunately, being a hot head on Love and Hip Hop doesn’t spell musical success. Erica Mena went on national TV to display her talents, and guess what? She can actually carry a note! The aspiring songstress gets props for continuing to follow her dreams, but based on the odds, chances of stardom are slim. It’s not too late to make like Martin and have a new dream.

Kim Zolciak

The Real Housewives of Atlanta wig specialist took everyone through her musical journey during the course of a season. What we learned was that Kim had very few friends, because no one pointed out her tone-deafness. Luckily, she doesn't rely on recording to pay her bills, so she won't take a financial toll with any future musical aspirations.

Dawn Richard

Now here's a success tale. Dawn appeared on MTV's Making the Band, the reality series that spawned Danity Kane. The girl group had some success before disbanding, but out of everyone that made any of Diddy’s “bands” on the show, Dawn was the only one to still have a relevant career. After Danity Kane, she became the third member of Diddy-Dirty Money and is now a strictly solo artist with dope pipes.
