Vibe's Top Trap/Moombahton Artists

Vibe's Top Trap/Moombahton Artists

Gabrielle Nicole Pharms Posted January 17, 2013
Without a doubt, the scene of EDM continues to progress by the minute. In the past few years, electronic dance music has been dominated by dubstep with the inclusion of electro house and DnB reworks. The end of 2012 gave a foreshadowing as to what we can expect to hear in the future: trap and moombahton.

Due to a fun, malleable structure of both trap and moombahton, the subgenres will surely continue to grow with the aid of these creatively charged producers. “It (Moombahton) still has the dembow riddim as its backbone and remains at a mid-tempo range of about 108 beats per minute, moombahton pioneer, Dave Nada has said. "But moombahton music has grown far beyond that, and not just in sound.”

Ready to twerk to the sounds of 2013’s hottest trap and moombahton producers?
So are we! --->
︻╦╤─ ƱZ ─╤╦︻
The masked crusader known as, UZ, not the artist formally known as Prince), has caught the rapt attention of the EDM scene. His anonymity is as intense as the standout trap tracks he produces. Who is this guy? Could it secretly be one of the L.A. based SMOG artists in a full cover-up? Perhaps. His appearance is a mystery, yet his amazing “Trap Sh*t” series and various remixes shine in the spotlight and sets of renowned producers including Flosstradamus, Diplo, and Baauer along with other industry heavies.

Sazon Booya
This NYC based moombahton producer duo consisting of Mr. Vega and DJ SAV are no rookies to the music game. Vega started out in hip-hop, and then began producing and DJing dance music. In contrast, SAV started out DJing on Technic 12’s and vinyl before transitioning into EDM. The combination of their passionate interest in the moombahton movement and ingenuity in producing solid tracks has aided in the subgenre’s evolution and growth. They recently opened for Afrojack and Diplo and the" Oye Mami" EP drops January 24th. This review would not be complete without the mention of Sazon Booya’s disguised hypeman, Mystereo, the life of the party at SB’s live sets.

Bro Safari
A couple of weeks ago, Nick Weiller, better known as Bro Safari, took the role of guest DJ on Diplo’s Radio 1Xtra show, ‘Diplo & Friends.’ In his live mix he played a variety of unreleased tracks and exclusives ranging from house to trap to his new musical playground, moombahton. He recently collaborated with fellow producer UFO! on the DnB-meets-moombahton track, “Savage Beauty,”dropped on the Moombah Forever compilation on January 15th.

Ookay
California based trap music producer, Ookay, is just as clandestine as UZ, except he has a face we can all see. His trap remix of Dillon Francis’ “Westside” is featured on DJ Green Lantern’s latest Altitude mix. Ookay’s use of raw background melodies, hypnotic sub-bass combined with hip-hop samples sets him apart from the new breed of trap producers.

DJ Imanos
Just trust the judgment of Tiësto, Laidback Luke, Diplo and Paul Oakenfold when it comes to music recommendations? Such high acclaim from the aforementioned artists for DJ Imanos peaked our interest. Imanos' release of the trap mix, “Love Trap Vol. 1” confirms that the buzz about Imanos’ work is indeed warranted. He is currently in the studio with Mad Decent working on his debut EP. It is rumored to feature a blend of electro house, trap and progressive house.

Baauer
It was love at first drop when we first heard Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.” No we're hooked to his trap drenched tracks and so is Just Blaze. The two producers are working on a collaborative project and will kick off their tour around the country next week. Though the 23-year-old producer is fairly new to the scene, his unique production skills is aiding in the definition of today’s trap music.

CRNKN
An addition to the short list of young trap music pioneers is 20-year-young, CRNKN, hailing from New Hampshire. He’s partnered with UZ on the twerkworthy track, “Booty 2 The Ground.” His series of remixes has a touch of Southern hip-hop trap while maintaining the buildups and drops that are signature to the EDM sound. Expect a nationwide tour later this year.

Tittsworth
It is recommended that a successful artist should never rest on their laurels. Although Tittsworth has performed at mega festivals and even played alongside Benny Benassi, he continues to progress as a producer by taking moombahton to new heights. His assets as a producer cannot be pigeonholed into one genre. On “Latido,” his joint track with Rez & Des McMahon, he combines cumbia with moombahton. In sharp contrast, his “Welcome To LA” mix is a cocktail of moombahton and edgy electro house. It is impossible to sit still while listening to any mix curated by Tittsworth.
