The Case: Gucci Mane rose from the ashes in late 2009. Even as he was serving a 6 month jail sentence, his most anticipated album to date, The State vs. Radric Davis, spawned the hit singles “Wasted”, “Spotlight” (feat. Usher), and “Lemonade”. Upon his release this past May, Gucci went straight to work on his third studio album, The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted.
The Verdict: Gucci’s appeal was a valiant effort but not enough to sway the masses on his crossover effort. A lackluster first single, “Gucci Time” (feat. Swizz Beatz,) drew little buzz and the album was littered with songs that sounded forced, disappointing Gucci’s core audience. With radio shying away from the all Gucci everything and a slew of new arrests already racked up, Hip-Hop’s true love affair with designer names may return to 5th Avenue.
